The Blue Mosque was built in 1465 under the orders of Jahan Shah, the ruler of the Qara Qoyunlu (also known as the Black Sheep Turkomans) from 1438-1467. The mosque was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1779, but reconstruction did not begin until 1973.
